SUMMARY:West Fargo\, ND: Prairie Roots Food Co-op
DESCRIPTION:Prairie Roots Food Co-op\nJoin Prairie Roots Food Co-op and Ugly Food of the North Sunday\, October 23rd at 3 p.m.  for a screening of the documentary Food for Change in celebration of National Co-op Month. \n$5 admission\, family friendly and all are welcome. Prairie Roots board members + the new General Manager\, Kurt Kopperud\, will be available to answer questions about the store and enroll new members before and following the screening. \nPrairie Roots Food Co-Op is dedicated to building a healthy community by providing access to natural\, organic\, and local food.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe plan to open a retail food co-op in downtown Fargo on the corner of NP Avenue and University. You can be part of making our vision for opening a locally-owned grocery store in our community by becoming a member-owner of our cooperative. Over 1\,000 people from the community have invested in this idea\, and our goal is 1\,500 local owners by the time we open the store next year. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYour ownership now will help us raise the equity we need to open our doors through your membership and through additional investment opportunities. Each member-owner has a voice in our cooperative and can attend the annual meeting\, vote for who is on the board of directors and even run for the board. Anyone can shop at our new store\, but member-owners will get special discounts and benefits. And together\, the member-owners will decide what we do with our profits.

SUMMARY:Belfast\, Maine: Belfast Co-op\, CDI\, and Crown O'Maine
DESCRIPTION:Belfast Co-op is co-sponsoring this screening with the Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) and Crown O’ Maine Organic Cooperative .\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBelfast Co-op\n\n\n…is an outgrowth of a grassroots effort by back-to-the-landers seeking access to good food at a fair price\, a unifying story among food co-ops across the country during this period. Essential support came from pre-order natural foods food-buying clubs in the region\, particularly the Friends Co-op in Liberty-Montville which realized that after three years operating as a buying club\, there was more than sufficient community interest to open a brick-and-mortar natural foods store in downtown Belfast. \nIn 1976\, the Belfast Co-op opened its first storefront at 16 Upper Main Street\, with an old wood floor and a sizable parlor stove. Our motto “All are welcome” was born. Working out of an 800 square foot shop\, our pre-order activity attracted new member-owners daily and the Co-op grew to accommodate orders from non-members as well. It was very loosely run\, with a Board of Directors more committed to providing good food for the community than making money\, and monthly meetings which took place in people’s homes and always included a potluck supper. \nMaine’s Largest Food Co-op\nAs we continue to grow and change\, we retain the same goals and mission reflecting cooperative values\, and providing goods and services to our member-owners and customers who visit us from three counties in midcoast Maine and beyond. With over 3\,900 member-owners and nearly $8 million in annual sales\, we remain Maine’s largest food co-op\, as well as one of the oldest.

SUMMARY:Urbana\, IL: Common Ground Food Co-operative
DESCRIPTION:Common Ground Food Co-operative\nCommon Ground Food Co-operative will screen the film at 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 23rd at the Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center\, 202 S Broadway Ave\, Urbana\, IL 61801.  Popcorn will be provided. \n“October is National Cooperative Month; what better way to celebrate than with a screening of Food For Change.  Food For Change (trailer) is an 82-minute documentary focusing on food co-ops as a force for dynamic social and economic change in American culture. It examines the important historical role played by food co-ops in lifting America out of the Great Depression through their pioneering quest for organic foods\, and their current efforts to create regional food systems\, build food security\, and strengthen local economies.” \nLocation: The Independent Media Center (map) \n\n\n\nLOCAL SINCE 1974\nBIRTH OF A CO-OP\nIn 1974\, a passionate group of students worked with neighborhood leaders and organized a cooperative food distribution system to provide healthy food to a low-income neighborhood in central Champaign. It was $1 to join. With no store and no staff\, Co-op owners would drive a big van up to Wisconsin and load it with organic and farm-direct foods to bring back to the community. Volunteers distributed the food from a church parking lot at Springfield and Wright streets. \n\n\nCOMMON GROUND IS GUIDED BY FOUR ENDS\n\n\n\n\n\nThese Ends are the reason we exist and are the embodiment of our owners’ vision- a statement created by the owners and their democratically elected Board of Directors. \n1. The Co-op is the center of a vibrant\, inclusive community \n2. The cooperative movement is strengthened \n3. The Co-op serves as an educational resource on food issues \n4. Our local food system is equitable\, robust and environmentally sound \n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Chico\, CA: Chico Natural Foods Co-op
DESCRIPTION:Chico Natural Foods Coop will be screening Food for Change during National Co-op Month\, October 2016.  Details are being worked out.  Stay tuned! \nGo coop!\nChico Natural Foods Co-op\nChico Natural Foods Co-op is a natural foods consumer cooperative\, which means we’re owned by our shoppers! Anyone can become an owner\, and everyone can shop here regardless of ownership.  Owners receive a portion of our profits each year.  A board of directors (democratically elected by owners) holds responsibility for ensuring the Chico Natural Foods Co-op meets the needs of the owners and that our resources are used wisely. \nOur History\nIn 1973\, 15 Chico families banded together as a buying club to bring a new way of choosing food to the local community. They wanted an alternative to food that was over-processed\, sugary\, or contained pesticides\, herbicides\, and artificial additives. The buying club grew from a parking lot meeting-spot to a store front. Chico Natural Foods Co-op now serves over 3000 active owners with gross annual sales nearing $6 million. \nFood for Change movie night at Chico Natural Foods Co-op\nWe’re excited to bring this history of food co-ops to our members and the community.  We’re proud to be part of that history\, and hope you will join us! \nCall (530) 891-1713 to confirm the location for the show. \n\n
