Food for Change tells the exceptional story of the food cooperative movement in the U.S. Director Steve Alves examines the historical role played by food co-ops and their current efforts to create regional food systems. The film describes the conditions that led to the Great Depression and the growth of the co-op sector, their decline following World War II, the re-emergence of food co-ops as an outgrowth of the 1960s movements for social change, and a resurgence of food co-ops in the last decade as farmers, co-ops, and consumers work together to educate co-op members and the general public about healthy food and co-operative economies. Food for Change is featured as a part of the El Paso Community Foundation’s Cultivate forum on local food systems and sustainability.
